Happy Mother’s Day to my mom, Christella Moody. She’s one of the smartest people I know.
From kindergarten through graduate school, she got straight A’s. In grad school, a professor gave her a B; she took the class over to get an A.
She graduated from high school shortly after her 16th birthday in 1953, then immediately started college at Central State University. She met my dad, an upperclassman, married him two years later, graduated from college, and headed off to Panama as an Army officer where my dad led the first racially desegregated group of soldiers in Panama in 1955.
Then a year later in 1956, I came along. So a few weeks short of her 19th birthday, she was married, an officer’s wife, living in another country, and is now a mother.
She went on to finish graduate school, raise 3 sons, and mentor countless other kids. I often think about what it was like for her being so young and doing so much at a young age. I am proud to call her my mother.
